Construction Debris Removal Pricing Explained

January 28, 20266 min read

Construction debris removal pricing sits in its own pricing world, separate from household junk. Demo waste is heavier, messier, and subject to much stricter disposal rules. If you are a homeowner mid-remodel or a GC trying to keep a jobsite clean, here is how construction debris actually gets priced in 2026 and how to budget for it without getting squeezed at the end of the project.

Section 01

How construction debris is priced differently

Household junk is priced by volume. Construction debris is priced by volume plus weight, because heavy materials change the economics. A truckload of carpet and drywall might weigh 800 pounds. The same truckload of tile and concrete weighs 6,000 pounds and costs the hauler 4x as much to dump. Reputable haulers quote construction debris with either a heavy materials surcharge or a separate line item for concrete, brick, dirt, and roofing shingles.

Section 02

2026 price ranges

These are realistic ranges for full-service construction debris pickup in mid-sized US markets. Heavy materials or dumpster rental alternatives run different.

  • Single kitchen remodel debris (cabinets, counters, flooring): $450 to $800
  • Single bathroom remodel debris: $275 to $475
  • Drywall and insulation from a room addition: $350 to $650
  • Roof tear-off debris (one layer, average roof): $600 to $1,200
  • Concrete driveway demo: $350 to $600 per 10 cubic yards
  • Full interior gut of a single-story home: $2,500 to $6,000

Section 03

Dumpster vs full-service

Construction debris is one of the few categories where dumpster rental often wins on price, especially for jobs running more than 3 days. A 20-yard dumpster runs $450 to $750 for a week and handles most single-room remodels. The trade-off is the driveway footprint, the risk of overweight fees, and the labor to load it yourself. Full-service crews win on speed (a 2 hour load-out vs 3 days of filling a dumpster) and on jobs with tight access.

Section 04

What you cannot include

These materials almost never go in a standard construction debris pickup and will cause the quote to bounce if they show up on pickup day.

  • Asbestos (requires licensed abatement)
  • Lead paint debris (requires EPA-certified handler)
  • Wet paint, solvents, and chemicals (household hazardous waste only)
  • Freon-containing appliances without recovery certificate
  • Live electrical equipment with PCBs
  • Treated or creosote-soaked lumber in some markets

Section 05

Getting a clean quote

On construction projects, always get the quote after the demo is staged and before the crew arrives. A walkthrough two weeks before pickup will not match what is actually on the ground. Ask specifically about heavy materials surcharges and make sure the weight ceiling is written into the quote. A contractor who says 'we'll figure it out' will figure it out in their favor.

Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

Can a junk removal company haul concrete?

Most will, with a heavy materials surcharge. Pure concrete or brick loads are sometimes referred to a dedicated dumpster service because standard junk trucks hit weight limits fast.

How much does it cost to haul away drywall?

Drywall alone runs $275 to $475 for a bathroom and $350 to $650 for a full room, including tear-out scrap, metal studs, and insulation. Most quotes bundle drywall with other room debris rather than separately.

Do I need a dumpster or a junk removal crew?

For projects lasting more than 3 days, a dumpster is usually cheaper. For single-day demo or cleanup after a contractor finishes, full-service is faster and wins on total cost once you price the labor.

What happens to the debris?

Metal gets scrapped. Clean wood gets chipped. Drywall goes to certified drywall recyclers in markets with them, or to C&D landfills. Concrete and brick go to aggregate recyclers. Very little construction debris ends up in a true municipal landfill anymore.
