Moving Out Cleanout Checklist: 48 Hours to Move Day

February 23, 20265 min read

The last 48 hours before a move are when most homeowners realize they have been packing boxes of stuff they do not actually want to take to the new house. This moving out cleanout checklist is built for that moment: the Friday night before a Sunday move, when it is too late to run a garage sale but not too late to save yourself from paying movers to haul junk. Follow the list, keep the clock in view, and you will walk out of the old place lighter and cheaper.

Section 01

48 hours out: The final walk-through

Walk every room with a laundry basket and a trash bag. Your only goal right now is triage: what absolutely must move, what you are on the fence about, and what definitely stays. The fence items go in the laundry basket for a second pass. The trash goes straight to the bag.

  • Empty the fridge and freezer (toss anything not in sealed packaging)
  • Empty the pantry (toss expired items, consolidate the rest)
  • Check every closet, including coat closet and linen closet
  • Check the attic, basement, and garage last (biggest junk wells)
  • Pull everything out from under beds and couches

Section 02

36 hours out: The 'paying to move it' test

Every item that failed the first walkthrough gets the movers test: would you pay $40 to move this? Movers charge by weight or volume, and the cost of moving furniture you do not love averages $50 to $150 per piece. If the answer is no, the item goes in one of three piles: sell, donate, haul. Do not second-guess. Move fast.

Section 03

24 hours out: Donate and sell

Donation drop-offs close by 3pm at most thrift stores. Load the car and hit Goodwill or Habitat ReStore first thing in the morning. For the sell pile, take photos and list on Facebook Marketplace with 'pickup today only' in the title. You are trading max price for speed. Anything that does not sell by the end of the day gets moved to the haul pile at 6pm.

Section 04

12 hours out: Book the haul

Schedule a same-day or next-day junk removal pickup for the morning of moving day. Most full-service providers can handle a 12 hour turnaround in residential markets. Confirm the crew will arrive before the movers do. Pile all haul items in the garage or on the driveway so the crew can load and leave in 30 minutes.

Section 05

Moving day morning: Haul first, move second

The junk crew arrives at 8am. They leave by 8:45am. The movers arrive at 9am with a clean, sorted house to work from. You just saved $300 to $600 in mover labor by not paying them to pack and move stuff you did not want anyway. This is the single highest-leverage cleanout in the moving process.

Section 06

Final sweep: The walk-out

After the movers leave with the last load, do one final walk with an empty trash bag.

  • Check every cabinet and drawer one more time
  • Check the garage rafters and attic access
  • Check behind doors and in the back of closets
  • Vacuum or sweep the floor of each room
  • Take photos of the empty house for the deposit

Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

Is it cheaper to toss or to move?

For anything worth less than $100 that would cost $40 to $80 to move, toss it. Movers charge for every cubic foot. The math almost always favors hauling low-value furniture and keeping only the high-value items.

Can I schedule junk removal the day of my move?

Most full-service providers offer same-day service in residential markets with 4 to 12 hours of lead time. Book the night before move day for the most reliable morning slot.

Will the movers take away junk?

No. Moving companies move items from point A to point B. They will not haul junk, and trying to hide junk in their truck violates your moving contract.

What do I do with the fridge food?

Donate unopened non-perishables to the local food bank the day before the move. Toss everything open or perishable. Do not move a fridge with food inside: it shifts, spoils, and ruins the inside of the unit.
